Huskies Hold Off Seahawks In Five

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Northeastern scored six of the final seven points to win the decisive fifth set in a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-10, 15-7) victory over visiting UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball on Friday night at the Cabot Center.

The Huskies improved to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in the CAA with the home triumph. The Seahawks, who now stand 4-3 in five-set matches after playing an extended match for the third time in the last four outings, are 11-7 and 1-4.

In the first game of a two-game swing to the northernmost outposts in the league, UNCW went back-and-forth with the Huskies in the five-setter before falling in the first of two regular season meetings between the teams.

The Seahawks took the opening set in the see-saw match, 25-21, before the Huskies fashioned a 25-22 verdict in the second set. UNCW jumped back ahead, 2-1, with a 25-20 decision in set three, but NU evened the match again with a 25-10 win in the fourth set, setting up a winner take all fifth set.

Freshman middle blocker Brooke Hunshumaker paced the Seahawks with seven blocks and senior middle blocker Kendall Bender had three. Bender moved past Sarah DeLair into eighth on the all-time blocks list, pushing her career total to 335 over the last four seasons.

Junior outside hitter Jaime Thomas paced the Seahawks with 12 kills and senior rightside hitter Madison Peters added 10. UNCW hit just .216 on the night, compared to .278 for NU.

Junior setter Brynn Montgomery finished with 28 assists and junior libero Anna Wiseman had 16 digs.

Outside hitters Erica Staunton and Evelyn Gonzalez recorded 20 kills apiece for the Huskies and junior setter Samantha Shupe wound up with 47 assists.

The Seahawks, in the middle of four consecutive road contests, continue their northern swing early Sunday when they travel to Long Island for a 1 p.m. match against Hofstra's Pride.
