Landfall Tradition Tees Off On Friday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Many of the top women's collegiate players in the country take the course at the Country Club of Landfall's neatly manicured Pete Dye layout this weekend for the 18th annual Landfall Tradition hosted once again by UNCW.

The three-day event will tee off early Friday and Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 25-26. The final round will commence on Sunday, Oct. 27, for a shotgun start at 8:45 am. The tournament will be contested on the Par-72, 6,140-yard rolling layout nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway near Wrightsville Beach.

UNCW begins play at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Admission and parking is free and spectators should use the Eastwood Riad entrance to Landfall.

"Landfall is a championship-caliber golf course located at a great destination near the beach, said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "It's a challenging venue that will always be in great shape to compete, thanks to the staff at Landfall."

"Every year we have an outstanding collection of nationally-ranked teams. This year is no different. We always want to present the kind of experience that teams want to come back to. The great competition these teams bring is further highlighted by some of the best golfers in the world."

The nationally-known tournament features six of the top-25 teams this year, according to the latest Golfstat rankings: No. 9 South Carolina, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 13 Alabama, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Illinois and No. 20 Virginia Tech.

The 18-team field is shored up by UCF, Florida State, Furman, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, Purdue and Virginia along with host UNCW. The Hokies make their first appearance in the field.

The Boilermakers (2005, 2011), Cavaliers (2006), Cowgirls (2012), Crimson Tide (2013) and Gamecocks (2016) return to Landfall having previously won the tournament.

Duke (2009, 2015, 2017, 2018) is the only school to win three championships in a four-year span, including overcoming an eight-stroke deficit to South Carolina in the final round to capture last season's title. The Blue Devils are the third back-to-back champions, joining New Mexico (2003-04) and Wake Forest (2007-08).

Duke teammates Gina Kim and Virginia Elena Carta each shot an even-par 216 last season to share individual medalist honors. This year's Blue Devils join 2006-07 Purdue, 2011-12 UCLA and 2016-17 Duke as the only teams not to participate in the Landfall Tradition the year after winning the contest.

The Seahawks continue their season after competing in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational two weeks ago. Sophomore Phu Khine, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, shot a four-under-par 68 on the final day at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, NC.

UNCW sits second in the Golfstat CAA rankings behind the College of Charleston, which has competed in one more tournament than the Seahawks.

UNCW is the lone school to compete in every Landfall Tradition since its inception in 2002. NC State, Purdue and Virginia will tie Wake Forest with the second-most appearances at 14.
