Volleyball Wins Jefferson Cup

Kline named tournament MVP; Moss and Hunt named to all-tournament team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Halle Hunt led four Seahawks in double-digits with 15 kills as UNCW beat Youngstown State, 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21), on Saturday to win the Jefferson Cup with a 3-0 record.

The victory pushed UNCW's winning streak to seven games as the Seahawks now stand at 7-3. The Penguins, meanwhile, fell to 6-4.

"We really couldn't have asked for a better outcome this weekend based on the level of competition at this tournament," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Everyone competed hard and YSU gave us everything they had and played some very scrappy volleyball. Offensively, we stayed consistent throughout the match, but the difference was our blocking and defense, which helped us earn our leads."

Senior Maddy Kline, who was named tournament most valuable player, added 12 and did not commit an error in 37 swings. She posted double-doubles in all three matches.

"This was a great weekend for Maddy, who was playing near her hometown. She is continuing to get better each week and determined to help do all she can to help us win."

Hunt's 15 kills were a season-high and she finished the weekend with 35 kills and a .362 hitting average.

Rounding out those with 10-or-more kills were Anna Moss with 11 and Kendall Bender chipped in 10.

"Anna was one of the most active middles in the tournament and an offensive threat in transition."

The Seahawks Hit .326 on the match and held a 12-5 advantage in blocks.

Senior Katie McCullough paced the Seahawks with 17 digs.

Hunt and Moss joined Kline on the all-tournament team.

For YSU, Aleah Hughes, who was on the all-tournament team, had 13 kills and held match-high honors with 18 digs. Margeaux Thompson also finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs.

The winning streak is the longest since a seven-match winning streak during the 2016 season.

The Seahawks close out their non-conference play next Friday and Saturday, when they host the Hampton Inn Seahawk Invitational.
