Volleyhawks Stun Virginia In Five

UNCW has won matches against Power-5 programs in each of the last four seasons

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – UNCW rallied with wins in the final two sets to knock off Virginia, 3-2 (18-25, 25-9, 16-25, 25-14, 15-9), and run their winning streak to six straight overall and four consecutive years with a win over a Power-5 conference program.

After opening the season with three losses, UNCW has rattled off six consecutive wins to improve to 6-3 on the season. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, dropped to 3-5. Earlier in the day, UNCW topped George Mason in four as the Patriots fell to 2-5.

"Today had some extreme ups and downs in both matches due in large part to serving and passing," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek."Whichever team won the serve and pass battle ended up winning the set."

In the UVA match, seniors Maddy Kline and Halle Hunt combined for 20 kills, each finishing with 10. Junior Kendall Bender added nine as six Seahawks recorded at least five kills on the match.

"Beating any ACC team on their home court is never easy and I'm so proud of how well our team responded after dropping the first set to Virginia. We had a balanced attack, but both Maddy and Halle put together amazing back-to-back offensive performances today."

Bender led UNCW with five kills in the fourth set as UNCW committed just three hitting errors in 27 attacks for a .370 hitting average. UNCW out-hit the Cavs, .287-.138.

Defensively UNCW held a 9-5 advantage in blocks with Bender holding match-high honors with five. Senior Anna Moss and junior Madison Peters both chipped in four blocks.

Senior Katie McCullough posted a match-high 16 digs for the Seahawks who also held a narrow 54-52 in digs.

Kline rounded out a double-double, her second of the day, with 13 digs

Against GMU, which the Seahawks won in four sets (21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16), Kline collected a season-high 14 kills and rounded out a double-double with 10 digs. Joining her in double-digit kills was Hunt, who finished with 10.
UNCW's Power-5 wins since 2015 have been against South Carolina (2017), NC State (2016) and Clemson and North Carolina, both in 2015.

The Seahawks close out the tournament on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. start against the Penguins of Youngstown State.
