Volleyhawks Edge Hoyas In Five Sets

UNCW finishes weekend at Hoya Invitational at 3-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Trailing 2-1 in sets, UNCW rallied past host Georgetown (25-19,22-25,23-25,25-19,15-9) in sets four and five to knock off the Hoyas on Saturday at McDonough Hall and closeout the Hoya Invitational with a 3-0 mark.

The Seahawks evened their record at 3-3 after sweeping Penn (25-14,25-17,25-16) earlier in the day. The Hoyas, meanwhile, saw their record dip to 4-4 after splitting their four matches this weekend.

"I'm so proud of the balanced attack we had all weekend," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Our setters are making some great decisions and hitters were terminal."

Junior Madison Peters had a team-high 15 kills in only 29 attacks as the Seahawks hit .285 on the match and landed three players in double-figure kills with all-tournament selections senior Maddy Kline and junior Kendall Bender adding 10 apiece.

"Madison was tremendous tonight, giving us extra firepower on the right side."

Sophomore Brynn Montgomery narrowly missed her first career triple-double, finishing with nine kills, 22 assists and 19 digs.

Bender, meanwhile, tied program record with 11 total blocks and totaled 16 for the tournament.

"Kendall came up clutch with her blocking against Georgetown."

The Seahawks out blocked their Big East Conference opponent, 16-4.

"I'm especially happy to see both Maddy and Halle (Hunt) attacking for a high percentage through both matches today."

GU's Iva Vujosevic totaled a match-high 28 kills and rounded out a double-double with 15 digs. Kenzie Higareda led all with 25 digs and Jessica Cusi chipped in 21.

Against Penn, Kline posted a match-high 10 kills, as the Seahawks hit .345 on the match, and Montgomery added 20 assists and 15 digs.

Montgomery and fellow setter Michaela White, a senior, both doled out 58 assists on the weekend.

UNCW opens its home schedule on Sept. 4 with a 7 p.m. start against Campbell.
