Roster Depth Shines In Volleyball Sweep

Four players finished with seven kills apiece in win against Norfolk State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a balanced offensive attack which produced a .429 hitting average, UNCW breezed past Norfolk State (25-17, 25-17, 25-9) on Friday at the Hoya Invitational at McDonough Arena on the campus of Georgetown University.

The win landed the Seahawks (1-3) in the win column for the first time on the young season while the Spartans, who were swept by the host Hoyas earlier in the day, dipped to 0-2 with their second loss of the day.

Caroline Marsh and Kyla Augustine were two of four Seahawks with seven kills. Marsh hit .778 (7-0-9) with no hitting errors.

"It feels good to get the first win of the season under our belt, but I'm happier with our offensive performance as it was a big part of our preparation for this weekend," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek.

Joining Marsh with a near-flawless hitting effort was junior Kendall Bender at .857 (6-0-7). Bender added a team-leading three blocks.

"Everyone stepped up in the opportunity they were given. Kendall and Caroline hit for a very high average and overall this match proved we have a lot of depth on our roster."

Rounding out UNCW's seven-kill club were Maddy Kline and Halle Hunt.

NSU's Bojana paced the Spartans with five kills, but they were limited to a .141 hitting average on the match.

UNCW hit a season-high .625 in the third setting behind 16 kills and just one error in 24 attacks.

The Seahawks will play two matches on Saturday beginning with a 2 p.m. start against Penn followed by a 6 p.m. first-serve with host Georgetown.
