Volleyhawks Fall In Season Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore Brynn Montgomery led UNCW with eight kills and 11 assists as the Seahawks bowed to nationally-ranked Illinois, 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-16) in the season-opener for both teams on Friday at Moby Arena.

The 12-th ranked Fighting Illini out hit the Seahawks, .299-.094, led by Jaqueline Quade's 15 kills in 30 attacks. Ali Bastianelli added nine kills and Blakye Hranicka had eight.

Seniors Maddy Kline and Katie McCullough finished with seven digs apiece for the Seahawks while Anna Moss tied for match-high honors with three total blocks.

Morgan O'Brian held match-high honors with 18 digs and Ashlyn Fleming posted three blocks as Illinois out blocked the Seahawks, 6-4.

UI setter Jordyn Poulter finished with 35 assists and five kills in six attacks.

The Seahawks visit Northern Colorado this evening for a 9 p.m. EST start against the Bears.
