HARRISONBURG, Va. – Charlie McConnell's two-out single in the Northeastern seventh scored the go-ahead run as the Huskies trimmed UNCW, 3-2, to force a second championship game at the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Huskies improved to 36-18 with the win and the Seahawks fell to 36-21.
Ryan Jeffers homered and drove in another run with a double in the sixth inning. The UNCW lineup combined to strikeout 11 times on the afternoon.
For Northeastern, McConnell and Cam Walsh finished with two hits apiece. Jake Farrell gave NU a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer.
Brandon Dufault (2-1) earned the win, tossing three innings of shutout relief.
Luke Gesell (3-2) was the hard luck loser despite four strong innings of relief for the Seahawks.
Up next: The second championship game of the day and the final game of the tournament is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
How it happened: With two out in the seventh, Gesell issued a walk to Mason Koppens. After a weather delay of 92 minutes, UNCW reliever
Logan Beehler entered the game and Koppens stole second base to move into scoring position. McConnell then singled to right to put the Huskies on top.
