Diamond Hawks Earn Fifth CAA Title

UNCW advances to the NCAA Regionals For A Ninth Time

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Cole Weiss, the tournament's most outstanding player, broke a 3-all deadlock in the sixth inning with a two-run single as UNCW knocked off top-seed Northeastern, 7-4, to win the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for a fifth time on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Seahawks (37-21), who were making their fourth straight CAA Championship appearance, claimed their first title since 2015 in Charleston and earned the league's automatic berth to next week's NCAA Regionals. Northeastern (36-19) who was making its first title game appearance, now waits to see if they earn an at-large bid to the regionals.

Freshman Greg Jones, who earned All-Tournament honors, paced the Seahawks with three hits, including a home run to lead off the game. He finished with three runs batted in. Kep Brown added two hits while Weiss and David Sheaffer drove in two runs apiece. Sheaffer belted a two-run homer in the second that gave the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.

Clark Cota (3-0) earned the win in relief, tying his career-high with 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Warren nailed down his second save of the tournament. He struck out five over three innings of shutout baseball.

Max Burt doubled twice for the Huskies and Ryan Solomon added two hits of his own, including his eighth homer of the season that narrowed UNCW's lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Mason Koppens also had two hits.

Sean Mellen (10-3) took the loss, allowing three runs over 2 1/3 innings.

Up next: The Seahawks return to the postseason for a ninth time and will find out their regional destination on May 28 on ESPNU at noon. UNCW will have a watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings on Eastwood Road and all are invited to watch with the program to see where it will play next.

How it happened: Ryan Jeffers worked a walk to open the sixth for the Seahawks. Brown doubled him to third with one out and Weiss followed one batter later with a RBI single back up the middle to score both Jeffers and Brown.
