Seahawks Set Record For NCAA Awards

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A record nine UNCW athletic teams have received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for placing among the top 10 percent nationally in the classroom. It's the largest number of honorees for the Seahawks since six teams were recognized in the first year of the program.

The NCAA recognized more than 1,200 Division I teams on Wednesday with Public Recognition Awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The teams recorded multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The 1,284 teams from 312 schools recognized for high achievement included 827 women's teams and 457 men's or co-ed teams. The total number of teams recognized increased by 79 from one year ago.

The scores ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. A total of 1,188 teams earned a perfect score.

The APR is a yearly measure of eligibility and retention for student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I sports team. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Wednesday's scores are based on a multi-year rate that includes scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

This year's nine awards raise UNCW's total to 40 since the program originated in 2004-05. The women's tennis team has been honored six straight years – the longest running streak for the Seahawks.
