Seahawks Earn Split With Delaware

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Anna Knox celebrated her birthday in style as her home run and two runs batted in helped UNCW secure a split of a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader against Delaware at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who moved to 16-26 overall and 6-11 in the CAA, overcame a 5-1 setback in the opener to blank the Blue Hens by a 3-0 count in the nightcap. Delaware stands at 12-31 overall with a 4-13 record in league play.

Knox drove in two of the Seahawks' three runs in the shutout victory, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning before adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Senior Sarah Davis, who upped her record to 4-7 in the circle, earned the shutout win after scattering four hits with five strikeouts while not walking a batter.

Sophomore Dominique Travers led UNCW with three hits and a walk in the doubleheader while sophomore Meghan Whitecavage, senior Kelsey Bryan and junior Kali Jones added two-hit efforts.

Senior Mariah Kondravy paced Delaware with three hits, including her sixth home run of the season, while senior Leanna Gearhart notched two hits with a pair of stolen bases.

How It Happened – Game 1: Delaware scored a run in the second and third innings before UNCW trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly by junior Lacey Fox. Kondravy increased the Blue Hens' lead to 5-1 with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

How It Happened – Game 2: UNCW used a run in the second and third innings to build a 2-0 lead on Knox's home run and a run by Hannah Adamczyk, who scored on a wild pitch and throwing error. Knox added an insurance run in the sixth inning on her sacrifice fly.

Inside the Box Scores: UNCW had its leadoff hitter reach base in 7-of-13 visits to the plate … The Seahawks and the Blue Hens were a combined 4-for-23 with runners in scoring position and left 23 runners on base in the two games … Delaware was 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts.

Notes: UNCW earned its fourth shutout victory of the season with the 3-0 win … It was the Seahawks' first shutout since blanking North Carolina, 3-0, on Apr. 3 … Davis earned the third solo shutout of her college career … She also moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Seahawks' career wins list with her 34th victory … Bryan now ranks 20th on the Seahawks' all-time hits list (138) … UNCW improved to 8-7 this year when hitting at least one home run and 10-3 when holding opponents to two runs or less.

Up Next: UNCW and Delaware complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon with a single game starting at noon. The series finale will also serve as the Seahawks' annual "Strike Out Cancer" contest.
