Weiss Powers UNCW To Series Win

Sophomore Cole Weiss had two home runs and drove in four runs as UNCW topped William & Mary, 7-2

WILLIAMSBURG, VirginiaCole Weiss homered twice and drove in four runs as UNCW wrapped up a series win on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over William & Mary at Plumeri Park.

The Seahawks ran their record to 19-8 with the road win and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe, meanwhile, dropped to 10-18 and 1-5 in the league.

Weiss became the fourth Seahawk to homer twice in a game when he belted a two-run shot in the fourth and added a solo blast in the sixth inning. The sophomore finished with three hits, including an RBI single in the seventh.

Ryan Jeffers posted a three-hit game of his own, including his eighth round tripper of the season in the first inning. Jeffers added a RBI single in the fifth inning and later came around to score in the ninth after leading off the frame with a single.

Mason Berne added two hits for the Seahawks, who finished with a 12-7 advantage in hits.

Reliever Justin Walke (4-0) earned the win, scattering four hits and allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings. He took over in the fifth inning following four innings of one-hit, one-run baseball from Gage Herring.

Zach Pearson collected two hits for the Tribe and Hunter Smith belted his fifth homer of the season in the sixth inning.

Starter Jacob Haney (1-5) took the loss for W&M, allowing three runs on three hits and a pair of walks in four innings.

Up next: The Seahawks close out their road swing on Apr. 3 with a 6:30 p.m. start at nationally-ranked East Carolina.

How it happened: UNCW broke open a tied ballgame with four runs over the middle three innigs to take a 5-2 lead. Weiss broke the deadlock with a two-run shot to left center in the fourth and UNCW added an unearned run in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. Weiss' second round tripper in the sixth made it 6-1.

Inside the box score: UNCW finished with eight two-out hits while the Tribe was 0-9 and went just 1-13 with runners on base … Three of Weiss' four RBI's came with two out and Jeffers added a pair of his own with two out.

Notes: Both Berne and Jeffers extended their consecutive games on base streaks to 21 games … Berne owns UNCW's longest current hitting streak at eight games … With Jeffers' homer in the first inning, the Seahawks avoided a homerless three-game series, dating back to 2014 (Apr. 2-4) against UNC Asheville at Brooks Field … The Seahawks have a record of 6-3 on the road this season, they won just seven road contests in 2017 … UNCW's bullpen leads the nation with 14 wins … Noah Bridges swiped his team-leading eight base of the season and Greg Jones added his seventh … Reliever Austin Easter pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief on Easter Sunday.
