Diamond Hawks Rally Past Tribe, 3-2

UNCW improves to 6-0 in one-run games

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.Zack Canada had three hits and UNCW scored twice in the eighth inning to rally past William and Mary for series-tying 3-2 win at Plumeri Park on Saturday.

The Seahawks ran their record to 6-0 in one-run games while moving to 18-8 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe dropped to 10-17 overall and 1-4 in the CAA with the loss, their 10th one-run loss of the season.

Reliever Austin Warren (4-0) earned the win, striking out three in 2 1/3 innings for the Seahawks. Clark Cota posted his league-leading eighth save of the season.

W&M starter Bodie Sheehan (1-3) was the hard-luck loser after allowing three runs on nine hits and pitching into the eighth inning.

Canada was joined by Cole Weiss with two hits in having multi-hit afternoons for the Seahawks, who held a 9-7 advantage in hits.

Brandon Raquet collected two hits for the Tribe.

Up Next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Plumeri Park.

How it happened: Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Canada doubled with one out and was plated one later batter on a RBI double by Ryan Jeffers into the leftfield corner. An intentional walk to Mason Berne brought David Sheaffer to the plate and he followed with a single to left that scored Jeffers with the eventual winning run.

Notes: UNCW starter Landen Roupp struck out a career-high eight and allowed two runs, one earned … The win gave UNCW's bullpen 13 wins on the season … Opponents are hitting just .190 against Seahawk relievers … Mason Berne tied the game with a sixth-inning double that extended his hitting streak to seven games and his consecutive games reached safely to 20 … It also gave him 17 2-out RBI's on the season … Cota now ranks fifth with 12 career saves and is now tied for fourth on the single-season list with eight.
