Tribe Takes CAA Opener From UNCW

William & Mary jumped in front 5-0 through two innings

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Zack Canada and Noah Liles finished with two hits apiece for UNCW, but William & Mary was able to get out to an early lead and win the Colonial Athletic Association series opener, 7-3, on Friday at Plumeri Park.

The Seahawks saw their modest winning streak halted at three to drop to 17-8 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Tribe, which was swept at Charleston last weekend, improved to 1-3 in the CAA and 10-16 overall with its second straight win.

Reliever Jamie Sara (3-3) picked up the win while Seahawk starter Alex Royalty (3-2) took the loss.

Ryan Hall and Zach Pearson each had two hits for the Tribe. Pearson knocked in three runs and score twice.

Up Next: The series continues on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start at Plumeri Park.

How it happened: William & Mary jumped on Royalty for a run in the first and four more in the second to take an early five-run lead. Pearson highlighted the second inning outburst with a two-run single and two more runs came across on a two-out error.

Notes: Ryan Jeffers and Mason Berne both pushed their on-base streaks to 19 games while Berne extended his hitting streak to six games … Levin Gesell tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief for UNCW in his season debut … Noah Bridges stole his team-high seventh base.
