UNCW Saddles Camels With 8-3 Loss

Five Seahawks have multi-hit games

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Senior Mason Berne drove in two runs and was one of five Seahawks with multi-hit games as UNCW clipped Campbell, 8-3, on Tuesday at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Seahawks earned their fourth road win of the season and upped their record to 17-7. The Camels, who swept the series last season, dipped to 13-12.

Berne, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week on Monday, was joined by Jackson Meadows, who finished with three hits, Zack Canada, Riley Zayicek and Noah Bridges with two hits apiece. Bridges also stole two bases.

Justin Walke (3-0) earned the win, the 12th for the Seahawk bullpen this season. Six relievers combined to strikeout eight over the final seven innings.

CU starter Jamil Vanheyningen (0-1) took the loss in his first career start.

Christian Jones homered in the fifth inning for the Camels. No CU player had a multi-hit game.

How it happened: The Seahawks opened a 5-0 lead after two innings. UNCW plated a run on a throwing error and Berne pushed it to 2-0 with a sac fly. Canada knocked in a run with RBI single in the second as the Seahawks pushed three across for the five-run lead.

Notes: Berne and Ryan Jeffers both extended their consecutive games on base streak to 18 games … UNCW collected at least 10 hits in a game for the 10th time this season … UNCW improved to 10-0 when scoring more than six runs … Seahawk pitchers walked just one for the sixth time this season … UNCW leads the all-time series, 81-40-1.

Up next: The Seahawks head to Williamsburg this weekend for a Colonial Athletic Association series with William & Mary beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
