BRONX, N.Y. – Junior
Hannah Adamczyk went 4-for-4 with a home run and drove in two runs, but it was not enough as Hofstra edged UNCW by a 3-2 margin in the Colonial Athletic Association softball opener for both teams at Fordham's Bahoshy Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win elevated the Pride's record to 15-7 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, dips to 7-15 overall and 0-1 in the CAA with its third consecutive loss.
Adamczyk hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning to give UNCW a 1-0 lead before adding a RBI single in the seventh inning to complete her four-hit game.
Senior
Kelsey Bryan added two hits for the Seahawks while juniors
Kali Jones and
Anna Hessenthaler each contributed a hit.
Sophomore Kristin Hallam and senior Brielle Pietrafesa each collected two hits to lead Hofstra's seven-hit attack while sophomore April Cornell earned the win in the circle after allowing two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings with 12 strikeouts.
Junior
Haley Lenderman suffered the loss for UNCW after giving up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
How It Happened: Hofstra overcame the first-inning home run by Adamczyk to score three runs for a 3-1 lead the Pride did not relinquish. Hallam tied the game with a steal of home plate in the first inning before Pietrafesa blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Up Next: UNCW and Hofstra complete the three-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader at Bahoshy Field starting at 11 a.m.
