UNCW Baseball Drops Series Opener To Sun Devils

Jones and Jeffers homer for Seahawks

TEMPE, ArizonaGreg Jones and Ryan Jeffers both homered for UNCW, but the Seahawks were undone by five errors in a 9-4 loss to Arizona State in the opener of a three-game series on Friday at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils upped their record to 8-6 with the home win and now are 6-5 at Packard Stadium. The Seahawks, meanwhile, saw their four-game winning streak snapped with the loss and are now 9-4.

Collecting two hits for the Seahawks were Mason Berne, Cole Weiss, Doug Angeli and Jones. Jones and Jeffers belted their second and fourth homers of the season, respectively, in the fifth inning as UNCW narrowed its deficit to 7-4.

Offensively, Hunter Bishop's three hits paced the Sun Devils as four hitters finished with two hits apiece. Craig Aldrete and Bishop both finished with three RBI's apiece.

Reliever Alec Marsh (2-0) earned the win with 3.1 innings of one-hit relief. Chaz Montoya picked up his fourth saves going the finale 1.1 innings.

UNCW starter Alex Royalty (2-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, over three innings.

Up next: The series continues on Saturday as Zarion Sharpe makes his fourth start of the season for UNCW. Game time is slated for 8:30 p.m. EST.

How it happened: The Sun Devils reached Royalty for four runs in the first inning to take the lead. The first ran came across on a throwing error on a double steal and Aldrete doubled home the second run. Later in the inning, Bishop singled in the third and fourth runs.

Notes: UNCW committed five errors earlier this season against Coastal Carolina (2/28) … Three double plays were a season-high for the Seahawks … Angeli now has a four-game hitting streak … UNCW pitchers walked nine batters on the night, setting a season-high … Royalty matched his career-high with four walks.
