Diamond Hawks Explode For Nine Runs In Shutout Win

The Seahawks finished with a season-high 15 hits and five doubles

TEMPE, Arizona – David Sheaffer's solo homer in the sixth inning kick started UNCW's offense while pitchers Zarion Sharpe and Austin Easter shutdown Arizona State as the Seahawks evened the weekend series with a 9-0 win on Saturday at Packard Stadium.

The Seahawks upped their record to 10-4 on the season and 2-2 on the road. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, dropped to 8-7.

Every hitter in the UNCW lineup finished with a hit and Sheaffer's leadoff homer powered the Seahawks to plate nine runs over the final four innings. Six different hitters finished with two hits while Greg Jones, Ryan Jeffers and Mason Berne all doubled home two runs.

Sharpe (1-2) earned his first win of the season, scattering three hits over 5 1/3 shutout innings. The lefthander struck out four while lowering his earned run average to 3.12. Easter closed out the game allowing just two hits and striking out three over the course of his 3 2/3 innings.

ASU starter Eli Lingos matched Sharpe with five shutout innings until Sheaffer's home to open the sixth. Lingos surrendered three runs on 10 hits and three walks. He struck out seven.

Up next: The series continues on Sunday at 2::30 p.m. EST. Freshman Landen Roupp gets the start for the Seahawks.

How it happened: Sheaffer broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth when he homered on the first pitch he saw from Lingos leading off the inning. The Seahawks would add two more in the seventh and then pile on four runs in the eighth to make it 7-0.

Inside the box score: Sharpe and Easter combined to hold ASU hitless with two outs (0-6), with RISP (0-10) and allowed just one leadoff hitter to reach safely … UNCW finished with six two-out hits while hitting .350 (7-20) with RISP.

Notes: The Seahawks tied a season-high with 15 assists in the field … UNCW turned a pair of double plays to end innings and strand Sun Devils in scoring position … Doug Angeli extended his hitting streak to five games and Zach Canada has now reached base safely in nine straight games … The shutout was UNCW's second of the season (Feb. 23, App. State, 2-0) … For Easter, it was his fourth career save and he's limiting opponents to a .208 batting average … He's struck out 15 in 13 2/3 innings … The Seahawk bullpen has a 7-0 record and five saves through 14 games … 15 hits, including five doubles, were season-highs for the Seahawks.
