UNCW Clinches CAA Berth In Dramatic Fashion

Seahawks rally to win the final three sets and turn back Phoenix


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Staring a 2-0 deficit and need to win one of its final two matches to earn a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth, UNCW rallied for a 3-2 win (23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-10) over visiting Elon on Thursday at Hanover Hall.

The Senior Night win halted a brief two-match losing streak for the Seahawks and raised their record to 14-11 overall and 7-8 in the CAA. The Phoenix, who were gunning for a season sweep of the Seahawks, dipped to 13-14 and 4-11.

Junior Madison Peters' 17 kills were one off her career-high of 18 set earlier this season, also against Elon. Joining her in double figures were seniors Anna Moss and Maddy Kline with 11 and 10, respectively.

After struggling offensively in the first two sets, UNCW hit .407 in the third set and .190 in the third. In the fifth and final set, the Seahawks hit. 417.

Peters and Moss finished with six blocks apiece as the Seahawks won the battle at the net, 11-7.

Elon's Nori Thomas collected a match-high 20 kills and Kam Terry finished with 15.

UNCW's Katie McCullough, a senior, recorded a match-high 22 digs as five Seahawks finished in double-digits.

Madi Genaway and Maddie Jaudon both had 21 digs for Elon.

UNCW sophomore Brynn Montgomery (30a/19d), Kline (10k/15d) and freshman Claire Sawyer (21 a/10d) fashioned double-doubles for the Seahawks.

UNCW never trailed in any set after falling in the second set, 25-22. There were a total of six ties over the final three sets with three of them coming in the fifth.

The Seahawks last competed in the CAA championship tournament in 2015 when they raced through the bracket to win the program's only title and advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time.
