RICHMOND, Virginia – Redshirt senior guard
Shrita Parker recorded the first double-double of her college career, but it was not enough as VCU pulled away in the second half to claim a 58-47 non-conference victory over UNCW at E.J. Wade Arena on Wednesday evening.
Â
The win allowed the Rams to increase their record to 5-2 on the season while UNCW dropped to 4-2 after seeing its three-game win streak snapped. Â
Â
Parker, who scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game, led all players with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior guard
GiGi Smith and junior guard
Lacey Suggs each added 11 points for the Seahawks in the loss.
Â
Sophomore guard Taya Robinson, freshman forward Kseniya Malashka and junior guard Jailyn Maddox each netted 10 points to pace the Rams, who earned their third win in the last four games.
Â
Key Moment: The Rams used a 14-3 run over the final 5:31 of the third quarter to take a 40-29 lead they did not relinquish. VCU held UNCW without a field goal during the run as the Seahawks were limited to three made free throws by junior guard
Ahyiona Vason.
Â
Up Next: UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum to open its December slate on Saturday for a 2 p.m. non-conference tilt against Fayetteville State. It will be the first game of a basketball doubleheader in addition to being a "Blue Out" game and the Seahawks' annual "Barefootin' Night." Â
