Seahawks Soar Over Grand Canyon

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Redshirt senior guard Shrita Parker led four UNCW players in double figures with a game-high 19 points as the Seahawks surged past Grand Canyon to earn a 77-55 victory over the Lopes in non-conference women's basketball action at Trask Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who have posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season, improved to 3-1 on the season while Lopes dropped to 1-2 with their second straight defeat.

Parker, who scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, made 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-5 showing from three-point range, while contributing a career-high five steals, four assists and three rebounds.

Redshirt junior guard GiGi Smith and junior guard Timber Tate each added 14 points in the victory. Smith converted 5-of-13 field goal attempts and all four of her free throw attempts while Tate knocked down 4-of-10 three-pointers.

Senior guard Chinyere Bell chipped in 11 points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting from the field for the Seahawks, who shot 44.1 percent from the field.

Grand Canyon was led by senior center Sharon Miller, who posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Venla Varis scored a team-high 15 points while freshman guard Laura Piera contributed 11 markers.

Key Moment: After falling behind by a 20-18 margin, UNCW outscored Grand Canyon, 17-8, over the final nine minutes of the second quarter to take a 35-28 lead the Seahawks did not relinquish. Parker scored the Seahawks' final seven points of the frame to lead the charge.

Up Next: UNCW begins a two-game road swing on Tuesday, Nov. 20, with an 11 a.m. matchup at North Carolina Central. It will be the 11th all-time meeting between the Seahawks and the Eagles.
