WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior forward
Phillip Goodrum scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute as UNCW rallied to defeat William & Mary, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who beat William & Mary in Wilmington for just the second time in series history, upped their record to 12-3-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the CAA while remaining in contention for the league's regular season title. The Tribe, meanwhile, dipped to 4-9-2 overall and 2-3-2 in league play.
Goodrum gave UNCW the one-goal victory when he knocked in his CAA-leading 12th goal of the season off a free kick from redshirt junior
Danny Reynolds.
William & Mary took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when freshman Devin McCarthy scored his second goal of the year with an unassisted marker after redshirt senior
Ryan Cretens tried to clear the ball out of the penalty area.
But, the Seahawks responded with 23:15 remaining in regulation when senior midfielder
David Lozano converted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season.
One of eight UNCW seniors playing in their final regular season home game, Cretens made four saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a 14-12 margin.
Redshirt senior Sam Onyeador tallied six saves in a losing effort for the Tribe, which suffered its first CAA loss since Sept. 29 at Hofstra.
Up Next: UNCW travels to Northeastern on Tuesday, Oct. 30, for a 6 p.m. CAA tilt against the Huskies. A win or a tie secures the No. 1 seed for the Seahawks in the upcoming CAA Men's Soccer Championship.
