WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Yazeed Matthews scored two goals, including the game-winning marker in the 94th minute, as Coastal Carolina edged No. 10 UNCW by a 2-1 margin in overtime at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The loss dropped the Seahawks' record to 11-3-2 while Coastal Carolina improved to 8-4-0 on the season.
Matthews, who netted his second two-goal effort in as many games, gave Coastal Carolina the victory when he converted a free kick from 20 yards past redshirt senior goalkeeper
Ryan Cretens with 6:06 left in the first overtime period.
The Chanticleers took a very quick 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest. After the Seahawks committed a turnover in the defensive half of the field, junior forward Tsiki Ntsabeleng sent a quick pass to Matthews, who chipped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.
But, UNCW evened the score at 1-1 in the closing minutes of regulation as senior midfielder
Ben Davidson sent in a corner kick that was headed in by junior forward
Phillip Goodrum to force the extra session. It was Goodrum's 11th goal of the season.
Cretens made three saves in the loss for the Seahawks, who outshot Coastal Carolina by a 15-6 margin. Senior Chris Dattalo tallied five saves in the win for the Chanticleers.
