McCullough Sets Digs Record At Elon

Senior libero totals 38 digs, eclipsing record set in 2007

ELON, N.C. – Despite a school-record 38 digs from senior Katie McCullough, UNCW was unable to hold off upset-minded Elon on Friday and dropped a five-set decision (22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 13-15) to the Phoenix at Schar Center.

The Phoenix earned a much-needed Colonial Athletic Association win to improve to 11-9 overall and 2-6 in the league. The Seahawks, who dropped their second five-set match of the season, tumbled to 11-7 and 4-4.

McCullough, who set a career-high earlier this season with 26 digs, broke the previous mark of 37 held by Ashlyn Morris, who posted 37 in a match at North Carolina Central on Oct. 9, 2007.

The Seahawks were unable to contain senior Kam Terry, who finished with a match-high 22 kills and added 22digs to round out a double-double effort. Madi Genaway and Leah Daniels added 12 and 10 kills, respectively for the Phoenix

Junior Madison Peters paced UNCW with a career-high 17 kills and finished off a double-double with another career-high of 12 digs. Senior Maddy Kline (15k/13d) and sophomore Brynn Montgomery (42 assists/16d) added double-double outings.

UNCW held an 8-5 lead at the switch in the final set, but Elon rattled off a5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Seahawk forced a tie at 13-all, but consecutive kills by Genaway closed out the match for Elon.

The Seahawks next visit Charleston for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
