WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore defender
Marissa Vincent scored her third goal of the season, but it was not enough as Delaware spoiled UNCW's long-awaited return to its home field with a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks dropped to 8-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the CAA while Delaware saw an end to its four-game losing streak while improving to 3-11-1 overall and 2-5-0 against league foes.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when sophomore forward Riley Dixon scored her second goal of the season on a 25-yard blast past senior goalkeeper
Caitie Broderick.
But, UNCW evened the score with 3:54 left in the opening stanza when Vincent scored off a corner kick by sophomore
Audrey Harding.
The Blue Hens reclaimed their one-goal advantage in the 65th minute when Dixon found freshman Toni Starova with a pass from the end line, which Starova slipped past Broderick for the first goal of her college career.
Broderick made three saves in the loss for UNCW, which outshot Delaware by a 9-8 margin.
Freshman goalkeeper Kamryn Stablein recorded three saves for the Blue Hens, who earned their first win since a 1-0 overtime victory at Elon on Sept. 23.
Up Next: The Seahawks play their final road game of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 18, with a 7 p.m. CAA fixture at the College of Charleston.
