Volleyhawks Drop Close One At Northeastern

BOSTON, Massachusetts – UNCW had its three-match winning streak halted as Northeastern topped the Seahawks, 3-1 (22-25, 23-25, 25-27, 24-26), behind 28 kills from Amy Underdown in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Friday at the Cabot Center.

The Huskies ran their record to 8-6 and their winning streak to three. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 6-7 with the road loss.

"The scores easily show how much of a battle this match was," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek, who is in her ninth-season. "We had some leads throughout each set that we could not hang on to. Our middles were effective early, but Northeastern's tough serving in the later part of the match made it difficult to run the offense we wanted. This match was a reminder that every point is important."

Sophomore Madison Peters paced the Seahawks with 13 kills and added five blocks. UNCW finished with a 14-9 advantage at the net led by junior Anna Moss' eight. Halle Hunt, a junior, added nine kills and 14 digs while fellow junior Katie McCullough had a team-high 22 digs.

Underdown rounded out a double-double with 16 digs while the Huskies, led by Gabrielle Eyl's 23 digs, posted a 96-69 advantage.

NU finished with three players doling out at least 10 assists with Kristen Walding posting a match-high 22. Junior Michaela White led UNCW with 20.

The Seahawks visit Hofstra for a 12:30 p.m. start on Sunday.
