Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eric Rhew

No. 13 Duke Holds Off Seahawks for 1-0 Victory

DURHAM, North Carolina – Senior forward Imani Dorsey scored the game's only goal in the 39th minute as No. 13 Duke edged UNCW, 1-0, in the Duke Nike Classic at Koskinen Stadium on Friday evening.

The win elevated the Blue Devils' record to 4-1-0 while UNCW dropped to 2-3-0 after suffering its second straight defeat.

Dorsey gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead with 6:05 remaining in the first half when she scored her fourth goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper Sydney Schneider.

Led by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn, Duke limited the Seahawks to just three shots.

Schneider tallied three saves for UNCW while Heinsohn made one save en route to her first solo shutout of the season.

Coach Paul Cairney Says: "This was another tough game against a nationally-ranked opponent. I am very proud of how tight and compact we kept things and it was a well-taken goal to break the deadlock. Duke presents many great attacking options and our job was to nullify as many of those options as we could. Congratulations to Duke Coach Robbie Church on his 200th win. After so many obstacles with the late start, we will need time to recover and regenerate to get ready for North Carolina on Sunday."

Game Notes:
  • The start of the game was delayed by over two hours due to the Auburn-North Carolina contest being delayed by inclement weather.
  • Duke now leads the all-time series by a 2-0-0 margin with both wins coming via shutout.
  • The Seahawks have been held without a goal for the last 182 minutes, 21 seconds. UNCW's last goal came in a 1-0 victory over UMBC last Friday in Baltimore.
  • Freshman Molly McGarry recorded the Seahawks' lone shot on goal against the Blue Devils.
  • McGarry, freshman Frannie Phillips and senior Serenity Waters each posted a shot attempt.

Up Next: The Seahawks face their second straight nationally-ranked ACC opponent on Sunday, Sept. 3, with an 11 a.m. contest against No. 9 North Carolina at Koskinen Stadium.
