DURHAM, North Carolina – Freshman goalkeeper
Sydney Schneider made a season-high seven saves, but it was not enough as No. 9 North Carolina defeated UNCW, 2-0, in the Duke Nike Classic at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Tar Heels, who won their third consecutive game, improved to 4-1-0 on the season. UNCW, meanwhile, drops to 2-4-0 following its third loss in a row.
Freshman forward Sydney Spruill gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when she converted passes from freshman midfielder Emily Fox and junior defender Julia Ashley for the first goal of her college career.
Just under four minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Bridgette Andrzejewski upped the margin to 2-0 with her first goal of the season after heading in a shot off assists from freshman forward Alessia Russo and senior midfielder Megan Buckingham.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Leshnak tallied one save to record her second consecutive shutout as the Tar Heels outshot UNCW, 23-2.
Coach Paul Cairney Says: "This was another tough game against a top 10 opponent. To play on the field against a team that has won 22 national championship can only make us better. I thought we worked hard together and it was a great team effort. Even though the result didn't go our way, we can hold our heads quite high. I thought Sydney was fantastic today and kept us in the game. Games like this will make us better and help us to prepare to face ODU at home on Thursday night."
Game Notes:
- UNCW and North Carolina met for the first time ever in regular season play.
- The Seahawks dropped their third contest against an ACC opponent this year. UNCW fell to No. 11 Virginia on Aug. 18, before Friday's 2-0 loss to No. 13 Duke.
- Schneider's seven saves are the most by a UNCW goalkeeper since Carolyn Huddy notched 10 saves against Delaware on Oct. 7, 2016.
- Schneider has tallied 15 saves in her last three games while posting a .789 save percentage.
- UNCW allowed a season-high 23 shots against the Tar Heels. It is the highest shot total by an opponent since allowing 28 shots at Virginia on Nov. 20, 2015.
