Volleyhawks Capture Courtyard by Marriott Classic Title



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by tournament most valuable player Halle Hunt's 17 kills, UNCW clipped Western Michigan, 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12), to win the championship game of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic on Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks won the tournament with a 3-0 mark and evened their record at 6-6 as they enter the conference portion of the schedule next weekend. The Broncos, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 7-4 with the road loss, which also snapped a five-match winning streak.

Hunt, who had eight kills in the third set alone, added 15 digs to accompany her new career-high in kills. All-tournament selection Maddy Kline, who closed out the decisive set with back-to-back kills, finished with 13 kills and rounded out a double-double with 14 digs.

Madison Peters helped the Seahawks at the net with nine kills and five blocks while Kendall Bender added five kills, six blocks and four service aces.
UNCW finished with eight aces while the Broncos committed 13 errors.

WMU's Rachel Bontrager, an all-tournament selection, held match-high honors with 25 kills and hit .309 on the match. Teammate Sydney Lemay had 16 kills while setter Mary Murph tallied 56 assists and 17 digs for the Broncos.

The Seahawks make their swing through the northeast next weekend when they open Colonial Athletic Association play at Northeastern with a 7 p.m. start on Sept. 22.
