Seahawks Claw Past Gamecocks In Volleyball Action

DURHAM, North Carolina – Maddy Kline, who finished with 12 kills and 12 digs, completed a comeback with three kills in the final five points as UNCW dropped South Carolina, 28-26, in the fourth set of a 3-1 win Friday at the Duke Invitational.

The win raised UNCW's record to 3-2 while Gamecocks dipped to 3-2 with the neutral site setback. It was the first meeting between the two programs.

"Today was a big step forward for our young team," said UNCW's ninth-year head coach Amy Bambenek. "To hang close to Duke and respond with furious fight to earn the win against South Carolina makes all the long hours and hard work worth it. We never back down and our middles and outsides did a great job offensively."

The fourth and final set saw 20 ties and nine lead changes before UNCW was able to overcome a pair of late three-point deficits for the win.

Halle Hunt was the only other Seahawk in double figure kills with 11, but Anna Moss, Brynn Montgomery and Sydney Brock helped the balanced offense with nine kills apiece.

Brock finished with four blocks while Katie McCullough collected a match-high 24 digs.

Kline was joined by Montgomery with a double-double with Montgomery adding 21 assists and 13 digs.

USC was led by Mikayla Shields' 24 kills, a match-high, and Alicia Starr finished with 10. Setter Courtney Koehler doled out a match-leading 30 assists.

UNCW closes out the weekend with a noon start on Saturday against Northwestern.
