Seahawks Drop 1-0 Decision at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – Junior forward Ash Fairow scored the game's only goal early in the second half to propel Navy to its second straight win, a 1-0 victory over UNCW at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Sunday afternoon.

Navy improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory while UNCW (2-2) had its two-game win streak snapped.

After a scoreless first half, Fairow gave Navy the one-goal advantage when she scored her second goal of the season after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Karli Sottung.

Led by sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Fortson, the Midshipmen held UNCW scoreless en route to their second straight shutout victory. Fortson made four saves for Navy, which outshot the Seahawks by a 15-10 margin.

Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Schneider posted a season-high five saves in the loss for UNCW.

Coach Paul Cairney Says: "Navy took the game to us right from the start and we did not respond well. Giving up the goal at such a critical juncture was telling of our performance today. We will regroup and prepare this week for two top ACC programs. Our young team needs to bounce back from this and prepare to win the next game."

Game Notes:
  • Navy leads the all-time series by a 1-0-1 margin.
  • Prior to Fairow's goal, the Seahawks had not allowed a goal in 264 minutes, 42 seconds, dating back to the second half against Virginia on Aug. 18.
  • UNCW has not allowed a goal in the first half in the last three games.
  • Freshman midfielder Frannie Phillips and redshirt freshman forward Nikki Cox led UNCW with three shots apiece.
  • Navy committed a season-high 16 fouls against the Seahawks.
