WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina – Junior midfielder
Ben Davidson and freshman defender
Hjalmar Ekdal each scored a goal as UNCW closed out its exhibition slate with a 2-2 draw against No. 2 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium on Saturday evening.
Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when freshman Justin McMaster connected on a one-timer off an assist from sophomore midfielder Bruno Lapa.
Davidson evened the score just under seven minutes later when he scored on a 20-yard free kick. Ekdal followed in the 70th minute with a header goal after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder
Phillip Goodrum, giving UNCW a 2-1 advantage.
However, the Demon Deacons equaled the score in the 81st minute when senior midfielder Luis Argudo converted a penalty kick attempt.
Redshirt junior
Ryan Cretens and redshirt freshman
Kyle McGovern each made one save for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a 13-8 margin.
Coach Aidan Heaney Says: "This was a really good test for us against a talented Wake Forest side. It was an entertaining game of soccer. We defended well for the most part, but had some breakdowns that we need to avoid. We moved the ball confidently enough but needed to be a little more patient on the attack. I was really pleased with the response we showed after going behind. We scored two very good goals from Ben and Hjalmar to go ahead, but conceded a late penalty. We will look to recover the guys now and prepare for the first regular season game on Friday when it really counts."
Up Next: The Seahawks open the regular season next weekend with a pair of road games at Jacksonville and North Florida.
