Seahawks Sweep Pair of Games to Close Weekend

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomores Rachel Willis and Kelsey Bryan each recorded three hits to headline a 16-hit attack as UNCW swept a doubleheader against Hampton and Youngstown State to close out the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Softball Invitational at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who improved to 13-5-1 on the season, posted a 4-1 triumph in the opener over Hampton before shutting out Youngstown State, 7-0, in the nightcap.

Willis recorded all three of her hits in the victory over Youngstown State by going 3-for-3 with a run batted in while Bryan went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader, including a two-hit effort against Youngstown State.
  Sophomores Kelli Freeman, Lacey Fox and Hannah Adamczyk each homered for the Seahawks in the twinbill. Fox blasted a two-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Hampton before Freeman and Adamczyk each homered against Youngstown State.

Sophomore Haley Lenderman earned the win in the circle against Hampton after allowing one unearned run on two hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Senior Peyton Jordan, who upped her record to 6-2, posted her first solo shutout of the year in the nightcap after allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.  

How It Happened vs. Hampton: The Seahawks used an RBI fielder's choice from Adamczyk and an RBI groundout from senior Nella Chamblee to build a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Hampton trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth inning before Fox's two-run home run in the bottom of the frame gave UNCW a 4-1 advantage.  

How It Happened vs. Youngstown State: The Seahawks scored three runs in the first inning on Adamczyk's fourth home run of the season before adding single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings. UNCW completed the scoring by taking advantage of an error by the Penguins to score two runs in the sixth inning.   

Inside the Box Scores: Lenderman did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning against Hampton … Lenderman and junior Sarah Davis combined to induce 15 ground ball outs in the win over the Pirates … Hampton was just 1-for-11 with runners on base … Youngstown State pitcher Caitlyn Minney recorded just one ground ball out against UNCW while forcing 11 fly outs … The Seahawks were 8-for-19 in advancement opportunities against the Penguins.

#SeahawkStats: The Seahawks have won four of their last five games, including three in a row … UNCW outscored its opponents by a 17-9 margin in its four games this weekend … The Seahawks hit two or more home runs in a game for the fourth time this season … UNCW also recorded 10 or more hits for the fourth time this season with a 12-hit effort against Youngstown State … The Seahawks are 7-1 this season when hitting a home run and have outhit their opponent in 13-of-19 games … Willis posted her team-high fifth multi-hit game of the season against Youngstown State … Senior outfielder Merritt Wilkinson has hit safely in five straight games after posting a hit in each contest … Senior infielder Lauren Moore had her seven-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-1 with two sacrifice bunts against Hampton … Adamczyk has reached base safely in nine consecutive games … UNCW has limited its opponents to just two runs in the fifth inning this season … The Seahawks are now 8-1 this season when scoring six or more runs … Three of Fox's five hits this season have come as a pinch hitter … Davis recorded her third career save in the win over Hampton.
