Seahawks Take Nightcap, Win Series From Longwood

 
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Brian Mims had three hits while Clark Cota and Robbie Thorburn drove in three runs apiece as UNCW roughed up Longwood, 11-1, in the second game of a doubleheader to win the weekend series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 5-9 with the win while the Lancers dropped to 6-11 with the loss. Longwood topped the Seahawks, 5-3, in game one.

In the nightcap, Cota and Thorburn were joined by Ryan Jeffers, each with two hits. Casey Golden scored twice and connected on a two-run home run, his fourth of the season.

Reliever Jordan Bissette (1-1) evened his record earning the win. Bissette limited the Big South's top offense to one hit over 1.2 innings of relief.

Starter Tyler Wirsu (0-2) took the loss for Longwood, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five in six innings.

Up next: The Seahawks close out their nine-game homestand on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. start against Coastal Carolina.

How it happened: Game 1: Longwood opened up a 2-1 ballgame in the fifth inning with three runs on three hits against losing pitcher Logan Beehler (0-3).
Game 2: UNCW was able to plate five runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to build an 11-1 lead. In the seventh, Thorburn connected on a bases-clearing double to highlight the frame.

Inside the box score: Game 1: UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base just one while Longwood did so four times … Longwood left just five men on base … Game 2: The Seahawks finished with five 2-out RBI's … UNCW pitchers combined to hold LU hitless with runners on base (0-10) and RISP (0-4).

Notes: UNCW won its second series of the season … The series was the first between the two programs … Cole Weiss made his first collegiate start in the second game and responded with the go-ahead RBI in the fourth inning … He also collected his first career hit and started three double plays … In game two, the UNCW bullpen combined to allow just three hits and no runs over 5.1 innings … Game two starter for UNCW was freshman Luke Gesell, who received a no-decision.
