Diamond Hawks Take Series Opener From VCU, 5-4

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Casey Golden doubled and homered and Mason Berne collected three hits as UNCW used a four-run seventh to knockoff VCU, 5-4, on Friday in the first of a three-game series at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 6-9 with their second straight win while the Rams dipped to 10-8 with the loss.

UNCW reliever Austin Easter (1-0) earned the win, retiring two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning. Clark Cota earned his second save of the season.

Golden drove in two runs as he belted his fifth homer of the season and later added a RBI double in UNCW's four-run seventh. Berne posted his second straight three-hit game and knocked in the go-ahead run with a RBI single in the seventh.

Paul Witt and Haiden Lamb had two hits apiece for the Rams, who built a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Alex Gransback knocked in two runs.

Reliever Hayden Moore (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in a third of an inning.

Up next: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. UNCW red-short sophomore Logan Beehler (0-3) will make his fifth start of the season.

Ryan Jeffers tacked on a needed run with a sacrifice fly later in the inning for the 5-3 lead.
