Volleyhawks Pick Up Big Win In CAA Tournament Berth Race

NEWARK, Delaware – UNCW's Madison Peters finished with a match-high 11 kills as the Seahawks picked up a big win in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth race with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) sweep of Delaware on Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Seahawks (9-16, 3-10 CAA) moved into seventh place in the CAA standings with the win and finished off a season sweep of the Blue Hens (5-18, 3-10). The win was also UNCW's first road win of the season.

"I'm really proud of the team for staying focused and playing with passion from start to finish," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Madison (Peters) and Sydney (Brock) were very terminal and provided a lot of energy."

Peters, a junior, led a balanced offense that had four players with at least seven kills. Senior Sydney Brock finished with nine kills and a .667 hitting average in 12 attacks. Halle Hunt added eight kills and Kendall Bender chipped in seven.

Freshman Brynn Montgomery handed out 34 assists as the Seahawks hit .259 on the match. Montgomery also had three kills, three aces, seven digs and two blocks.

"Our tough serving was key in forcing Delaware out of system which allowed our defense to stay focused on specific players. Overall a strong road win for our young team."

Led by Montgomery, UNCW posted six aces on the night while not committing a single reception error.

Defensively, junior Katie McCullough finished with a match-high 15 digs while Maria Bellinger and Maddie Judge finished with 13 and 11 digs, respectively, for UD.
Bellinger paced UD with nine kills, but the Blue Hens were limited to a .162 average.

The Seahawks close out their weekend with a 7 p.m. start on Saturday at Towson.
