NEWARK, Delaware – Delaware used a pair of first half goals to build an early lead en route to a 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNCW at Grant Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Seahawks' record to 5-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens improve to 5-6-2 overall with a 2-2-0 mark in league play.
Redshirt senior Andrea Gunderson gave the Blue Hens a quick 1-0 lead when she scored her first goal of the season in the third minute. With 13:09 remaining in the opening stanza, Delaware increased the advantage when freshman Gabby Johnson netted her third goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper
Sydney Schneider.
Schneider made four saves in the loss for UNCW, which was outshot by an 11-8 margin.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos contributed four saves to record her third shutout of the season.
Coach Paul Cairney Says: "Give credit to Delaware for creating and taking their opportunities. We got behind early and could not find the spark to get back into the game. We will bounce back and find a way to win the next game."
