Volleyhawks Fend Off Blue Hens In Five Sets

NEWARK, Delaware – Senior Nicole Lott and sophomore Maddy Kline combined for 42 kills and 37 digs as UNCW held off home standing Delaware in five sets (25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 15-10) in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center Aciero Court.

The Seahawks improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the league with their fifth straight win over the Blue Hens. UD, meanwhile dropped to 6-9 and 0-2.

"I have to give credit to Delaware for continuing to fight it out," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "They were able to find holes in our defense and we didn't adjust quickly enough in sets three and four. Nicole (Lott) and Maddy (Kline) took on a big offensive load, but we need to be more balanced in the future with getting all our options involved."

Lott's 22 kills were a match-high and she finished with a .385 hitting average, committing just two errors in 52 attacks. Her 22 digs also helped her notch her league-leading 10th double-double of the season.

Kline added a career-high 20 kills and chipped in 15 digs for her fifth double-double.

Sydney Alvis, a sophomore, collected a career-high 31 digs while senior setter Alyssa Desjardins had a double-double of her own with 29 assists and 15 digs.

Delaware placed four in double-digit kills with Maria Bellinger hold team-high honors with 21. Her 14 digs finished off a double-double effort while Autumn Jenkins had 20 digs and 10 kills.

How it happened: After seeing UNCW build a 2-0 lead at the intermission, Delaware was able to force a fifth set by hitting a combined .216 in sets three and four. The Seahawks were able to take the deciding set behind four kills from Lott and a pair of blocks by freshman Kendall Bender.

Notes: The Seahawks have won six of their last seven matches with Delaware, including the last four in Newark … Lott's 22 kills were one shy of tying the school record of 23 set by Bailey Lee (2000) and tied by Lott last season … Kline has set or tied her career-high in kills in each of her last four matches … Alvis bested her career-high in digs by 10 … Delaware committed eight service errors … UNCW improved to 8-1 on the road and 2-1 in five-set matches … Lott moved into sixth on UNCW's career kills list (1,061).

Up next: The Seahawks visit Towson on Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. start.
