Seahawks Upset No. 5 Charlotte for 2-0 Win


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman midfielder Phillip Goodrum and junior forward Stian Sandbekkhaug each scored a goal as UNCW handed No. 5 Charlotte its first loss of the season with a 2-0 decision in a non-conference game at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening.
 
The Seahawks improved to 5-1-0 on the season while the 49ers dropped to 4-1-0.
  Goodrum gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when he took a pass from sophomore midfielder David Lozano and blasted a 14-yard shot through traffic for his second goal of the year.
 
With 4:58 remaining in the second half, Sandbekkhaug notched his team-high fifth goal of the season after taking a pass from junior forward Julio Moncada and scoring on a shot from 15 yards.
 
Led by sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Cretens, the Seahawks held Charlotte to a season-low five shots. Cretens earned his third shutout of the season after making two saves.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Elliot Panicco tallied one save for Charlotte, which had outscored its opponents by a 14-0 margin in the first four games.
 
#SeahawkStats: UNCW ended a 10-game winless streak against the 49ers … It was the Seahawks' first win over their in-state rival since Oct. 16, 1983 … Charlotte leads the all-time series by an 8-6-3 margin … In addition, the Seahawks earned their first victory over a top-five ranked opponent since Sept. 19, 2006 against No. 5 Duke … The 49ers made their first visit to UNCW Soccer Stadium since 2008 … The Seahawks outshot their opponent for the fifth time in six games, but tied a season low with just eight shot attempts … Moncada tallied a point for the fifth time in six games … Goodrum's goal ended the 49ers' shutout streak of 371:56 to begin the season … Charlotte also became the last team in NCAA Division I to allow a goal this season … UNCW improved to 14-22-5 against ranked opponents since 2003 … The Seahawks have outscored their opponents by a 7-0 margin in three home games this season.
