Seahawks Start CAA Play With 1-1 Tie Against W&M


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Cretens made two saves as UNCW opened its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a 1-1 double overtime tie against William & Mary at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.
 
The Seahawks upped their record to 5-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the CAA while William & Mary saw its record improve to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
 
UNCW took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when the Seahawks received an own goal after a crossing pass from junior midfielder Kalvin Kromer was deflected by a Tribe defender and went into the goal.
  Sophomore forward Ryder Bell evened the score at 1-1 with 21:13 remaining in the first half when he headed in his third goal of the season off a free kick from sophomore forward Antonio Bustamonte.
 
While Cretens posted two saves in the tie, junior goalkeeper Phil Breno tallied six saves as UNCW outshot William & Mary by a 14-7 margin.
 
#SeahawkStats: Before the game, former UNCW Coach Calvin Lane was honored in a ceremony in recognition of his contributions to the men's soccer program … A group of more than 50 alumni along with their friends and family also attended as part of the program's Alumni Weekend … UNCW and William & Mary went to overtime for the seventh time in the last 13 meetings, including six games which needed double overtime … The Tribe still holds a 34-5-5 all-time advantage over the Seahawks, but UNCW is now 2-0-1 in the last three installments … Both of William & Mary's conference games have needed overtime after the Tribe dropped a 2-1 decision in its conference opener at Delaware last week … The Seahawks are 1-0-4 in their last five overtime games … UNCW received an own goal for the first time since last year's meeting against William & Mary when the Seahawks used an own goal in the 73rd minute to tie the game and force overtime … UNCW outshot its opponent for the sixth time in seven games and held an opponent to under 10 shots for the fifth time this year.   
 
Up Next for UNCW: The Seahawks continues CAA play on Wednesday, Sept. 28, with a 7 p.m. visit to Elon. It will be the first game in a three-game road trip for UNCW.
