Diamond Hawks Fall To Cougars, 8-5 In 10 Innings

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The College of Charleston plated three runs in the top of the 10th inning to complete a comeback and knock off Colonial Athletic Association leader UNCW, 8-5, to avert a series sweep on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Cougars (24-21-1, 8-10 CAA) improved to 2-1 in extra-inning games this season with the road win. UNCW saw it's 19-game home winning streak snapped and dropped 33-11 overall and 13-3 in the league.

Bradley Jones finished 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in five runs, including three on a fifth inning homer, his 11th of the season. Adding three hits for Charleston was Ryan Brown and Ervin Roper collected two hits.

Reliever Carter Love (3-2) earned the win with three innings of relief. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two while keeping the Seahawks off the scoreboard.

UNCW's Steven Linkous had three hits and scored twice while pushing his league-leading batting average to .409. Daniel Stack, Nick Stuart and Kennard McDowell each homered on the afternoon.

Closer Jared Gesell (1-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.

Up next: The Seahawks close out their home schedule on May 11 with a 6 p.m. start against North Carolina.

Home Runs: CofC – Jones (off Gantz in the fifth inning, two on, none out); UNCW – Stack (off Bauer in the second inning, leading off); McDowell (off Bauer in the third inning, leading off); Stuart (off Bauer in the sixth inning, leading off)

How it happened: In the 10th inning, Gesell walked in the eventual winning run after CofC loaded the bases with a hit, an error and a bunt hit. The Cougars added runs on a wild pitch and a single by Dupree Hart.

Inside the box score: UNCW was just 3-for-17 with runners on base and failed twice to score a runner from third with less than two out … The Seahawks were able to get their leadoff hitter on base in six innings … CofC advanced runners in 12-of-24 opportunities and went 5-for-11 with RISP … UNCW finished 2-for-11 with RISP.

Notes: UNCW finished its conference home schedule with a 10-1 record and saw it's 22-game CAA home winning streak snapped too … Robbie Thorburn saw his career-high nine-game hitting streak halted … Kennard McDowell and Nick Feight extended theirs to eight games … Feight tied UNCW's single-season two-out RBI record of 34 today after knocking two-out runs in the third and fifth innings.
