Stupienski Homers #14 Seahawks Past #20 North Carolina, 6-2



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Gavin Stupienski homered twice and UNCW pitchers combined to limit North Carolina to one earned run as UNCW topped the Tar Heels, 6-2, on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks gained a split of the home-and-home series and improved to 34-11 overall and 29-3 at Brooks Field. UNC, meanwhile, moved to 31-18 with the loss.

Stupienski finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three knocked in. It was his second multi-home run game of the season. Nick Feight added his team-leading 17th home run of the season.

Reliever Taylor Hyssong (2-0) picked the win with three innings out of the bullpen. Starter Whitman Barnes limited the Tar Heels to two hits and three walks while striking out four in four innings of shutout baseball. Jared Gesell nailed down his fifth save of the season.

Brandon Riley and Eli Sutherland collected two hits apiece for the Tar Heels and Sutherland launched his fifth round tripper of the season.

Rodney Hutchinson (1-2) took the loss, lasting just one inning and surrendering four runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

Up Next: The Seahawks visit James Madison on Friday for the first of a three-game conference series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

How it happened: UNCW jumped on the Tar Heels in the bottom of the first with four runs. Back-to-back home runs by Stupienski and Feight highlighted the outburst. Zack Canada completed the scoring with a two-out RBI single for the 4-0 lead.

Inside the box score: UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base in seven innings … The Seahawks were 3-for-10 with RISP while UNC was 2-for-14 … UNC (2) and UNCW (1) combined for three two-out hits … The teams also combined to strand 25 runners on base with UNC leaving 15.

Notes: UNCW is tied with Louisville for the most home runs in the NCAA with 29 … Nick Feight extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his solo homer … Feight now has 78 RBI's … Steven Linkous also moved his hitting streak to nine games … The Seahawks are now 19-1 when hitting at least two home runs … Hyssong has allowed just two earned runs over his last 21 innings covering 15 appearances for a 0.86 ERA.
