Seahawks Win Eight Events At Elon T&F Invitational

ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's and women's teams tuned up for the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships by combining to win eight events at the Elon Invitational on Saturday at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.

Competing in warm weather with a breeze, the Seahawks joined the host Phoenix and 13 other teams in the rare one-day meet. In addition to UNCW and the Phoenix, other teams competing included Barton, Belmont Abbey, Florida A&M, High Point, Louisburg, Mars Hill, Meredith, Methodist, Pffeiffer, Queens, Radford, Southern Wesleyan USC Upstate and Wake Forest.

"Our throwers had a great day, especially the men," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's interim head coach. "We had a solid day in some ways and not quite what we wanted in others. We had a couple of key injuries that aren't good for this late in the season. Hopefully, we made some mental notes for when we come back in two weeks and be better prepared for the CAA's."

Dan Caffrey, Trey Jones and Brock McKirgan each won two events. Caffrey took the Men's Discus (132-09.75) and Men's Javelin (189-08.25), Jones won the Men's Long Jump (23-09.50) and ran a leg on the winning Men's 4x100 Relay (41.99), and McKirgan captured first in the Men's Hammer (162-01) and Men's Shot Put (41-09.25). In addition, Moe Holmes was the top collegiate hurdler in the Men's 110 Hurdles with a time of 14.89.

On the women's side, senior Carolyn Edler won the Women's Pole Vault with a jump of 11-11.75 and freshman Courtney Cefalo had another big meet. The rookie from Thomasville, N.C., teamed with veteran Mikayla Kinloch to go 2-3 in the Women's Long Jump, including a PR of 18-06 in the event.

The Women's 4x100 Relay team also posted a season-best time of 47.27 and sophomore Alexis Dickerson had a PR of 43-00.25 in the Women's Shot Put, good enough for third place.

The teams next return to the same venue for the CAA Championships on May 6-7.
