Stupienski Homers Three Times As UNCW Rallies For Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Gavin Stupienski belted three home runs, including a grand slam in a nine-run eighth inning, to spur UNCW to a sweep of East Tennessee State with a come-from-behind 16-11 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

UNCW ran its record to 23-9 with its eighth consecutive win, a season-high, and 18-2 at Brooks Field. The Buccaneers, who dropped their seventh straight, dipped to 15-20 overall and 3-7 on the road.

Stupienski became the first Seahawk to homer three times in one game since 2008 when Daniel Hargrave slammed three at Hofstra in 2008. His seven runs batted in were a career-high and the most since Mark Carver plated seven at William & Mary in 2007. Kennard McDowell added three hits and scored twice while Steven Linkous and Daniel Stack had two-hit games. Stack belted his sixth homer of the season in that nine-run eighth inning.

Closer Jared Gesell (1-1) earned the win in relief, striking out three and scattering two hits over 2.2 innings.

ETSU was led by Jeremy Taylor's four hits and Trey York added three hits, including a three-run home run. Also homering was Blake Rowlett who belted his fourth round tripper of the season in the fourth inning.

Taking the loss for ETSU was Peyton Taylor (3-4) who was roughed up for three runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.
