Diamond Hawks Pound Three Homers In 14-7 Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Robbie Thorburn had four hits and Gavin Stupienski drove in four runs as UNCW overcame an early deficit for a 14-7 win over visiting Campbell on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

Winners of their last nine outings, the Seahawks improved to 24-9 overall and 19-2 at Brooks Field. The Camels, meanwhile, fell to 20-18 on the season and dropped both games of the home-and-home series with UNCW.

Thorburn, who also homered for the second time this season, pushed his average to .349 with the four-hit outing. Daniel Stack added three hits and scored three runs while Steven Linkous crossed the plate four times to lead UNCW. Adding two-hit games were Brian Mims, who hit his seventh homer, Stupienski, Nick Feight, who homered for the 12th time and knocked in three runs, and Kennard McDowell, who also had two RBI's.

Whitman Barnes (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Seahawks, who used six relievers on the evening.

Anthony Lopez and Matt Parrish had two hits apiece for the Camels, who held a 4-3 lead into the fifth. Lopez had two triples to raise his season total to five. Jimmy Monaghan homered in the ninth with a man on to complete the scoring. It was his fifth round tripper of the season.

Starter Wes Noble (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits over 5.2 innings.

Up next: The Seahawks return to conference play with a 6 p.m. start on Friday against visiting Towson.

Home Runs: CAM – Monaghan (off Lockamon in the ninth inning, one on, two out); UNCW – Mims (off Noble in the first inning, one on, none out), Feight (off Messer in the seventh inning, one on, two out), Thorburn (off Messer in the eighth inning, none on, two out)

How it happened: Campbell built a 4-3 lead after four innings and was tied 4-all with UNCW entering the sixth. With two outs and a runner on second, Linkous lifted a fly ball to shallow left where it was dropped and Stack scored from second for the go-ahead run, 5-4. The Seahawks added a run on a wild pitch and Stupienski singled home the third and final run of the inning for a 7-4 lead.

Inside the box score: UNCW had seven two-out RBI's on six two-out hits … Campbell was just 2-for-10 with RISP while the Seahawks were 6-for-15 … Linkous, Stupienski and Feight each advanced base runners in three plate appearances apiece.

Notes: Linkous extended his career-long hitting streak to 15 games with a leadoff single … UNCW improved to 17-1 when scoring 10 or more runs … Feight now has a nation-leading 62 RBI's and has tied UNCW's sophomore season record set by Josh Bonifay in 1999 … UNCW has homered in nine consecutive games … Stupienski has driven in 17 runs in his last seven games … Campbell's Lopez appeared to leadoff the game with a home run, but was called out on an appeal play at first base.
