Battle of the Beaches IX Final Results

CONWAY, South Carolina –
Coastal Carolina won its fourth straight Battle of the Beaches crown over UNCW by a score of 117-73 in men's track and field competition on Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Facility.

The Seahawks, making their outdoor debut in 2015-16, took on athletes from Coastal Carolina,  Coker and The Citadel in the meet. CCU grabbed a 7-4 all-time lead in the unique competition between the coastal schools.

In the men's competition, Bryan Brackney won the 800 Meters, Zack Nifong took the 1,500 Meters and Alex Boseman captured first place in the 3,000 Meters.

"We were fairly even through the running events, but Coastal really put it to us in the hurdles and field events today," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's interim head coach. "That was the big difference."

In the field events, Trey Jones won the Long Jump, Brock McKirgan took second I the Hammer Throw and Daniel Caffrey, returning to action after missing last season with an injury, finished second in the Javelin.

Winners on the women's side included Ari Whiteside (200 Meters), Alyssa Omile (400 Meters), Ramira Mayse (100 Hurdles), Courtney Cefalo (Long Jump), Molly Love (Pole Vault), Emily Kimble (High Jump), Sydney Dixon (Triple Jump) and Alexis Dickerson (Hammer/Shot Put). Whiteside had a personal best of 25.3 in the 200 Meters.

"Overall, we had some difficult today with the tight schedule and having to compete people in quite a few events in an attempt to score points," continued Schwier. "It takes a few meets to adjust to the longer race

"We head into spring break this week and look to get in some really good training with those who will be sticking around, and look forward to bouncing back next weekend with our home meet. We look forward to having a lot of alumni return.

"Today was just the first outdoor meet of the season. We have a lot to work on and we will get better.  We aim to get better each day and better each meet. If we can progress week to week like we did during the indoor season, we'll be just fine down the stretch when it really matters heading into CAA's in nine weeks."

The Seahawks return to Wilmington for their only home meet of the season next weekend, the Seahawk Invitational, on March 11-12, at the Harold Greene Track & Field Complex.
