Seahawks Claim Doubleheader Sweep Over Bryant

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a pair of solid pitching performances and timely hitting to earn a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader over Bryant at Boseman Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who improved to 16-9 on the season, rallied to earn a 4-2 victory in the first game before shutting out the Bulldogs by a 2-0 count in the nightcap. Bryant fell to 0-16 on the season after suffering its second doubleheader sweep in as many days.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Davis scored three runs and blasted her team-leading fourth home run of the season in leading the Seahawks to the doubleheader sweep. She also earned the win in the circle by allowing two runs on three hits in the first game with four strikeouts.

Junior pitcher Peyton Jordan, who improved to 7-2 on the season, tallied her second shutout of the season in the nightcap after scattering just four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Sophomore utility player Kelsey Bryan paced UNCW with two hits in the opener while junior outfielder Claudia Spinelli posted a pair of hits in the doubleheader with four stolen bases.

How It Happened – Game 1: UNCW overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring twice in the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Merritt Wilkinson evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run double to left center field. Davis gave the Seahawks a two-run advantage in the sixth when she hit a two-run home run to left field.

How It Happened – Game 2: The Seahawks used a two-run single by junior infielder Lauren Moore in the second inning to build a 2-0 edge they did not relinquish. Meanwhile, Jordan faced only three batters over the minimum en route to the complete game victory.

Inside the Box Scores: Davis and Jordan combined to force Bryant into 21 ground ball outs in the doubleheader … All six of the Seahawks' runs were scored with two outs … Bryant was 7-for-14 in advancement opportunities in the first game … The Bulldogs induced 23 fly ball outs in the doubleheader.

#SeahawkStats: UNCW improved to 15-8 at home this season, matching the school record for home wins they set last year … The Seahawks were 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts in the doubleheader, including a season-high six thefts in the second game … UNCW is now 17-for-18 in stolen base tries over the last five games … The Seahawks needed just 1 hour, 19 minutes to earn the win in the second game, marking their shortest game of the season in terms of time … UNCW is now 10-0 when holding opponents to two runs or less … Prior to the game, the Seahawks honored faculty and staff who attended the game as part of the team's "Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day."
