Seahawks Drop 71-57 Decision Against Drexel

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by a game-high 21 points from junior forward Sarah Curran, Drexel extended its win streak to six consecutive games with a 71-57 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNCW at Trask Coliseum on Friday evening.
 
The Dragons, who have not lost since a 67-56 defeat at James Madison on Jan. 15, upped their record to 12-9 overall and 8-2 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Seahawks fell to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in league play after dropping their second straight game.
 
Curran, who posted her eight consecutive double-digit scoring effort, made 8 of 11 shots from the floor, including a pair of three-point attempts, while connecting on all three free throws.
 Junior guard Meghan Creighton added 18 points for the Dragons after shooting 6-for-12 from the field, including a 3-for-7 performance from beyond the arc, along with converting all three of her foul shots with a team-high eight rebounds. 
 
Junior guard Alexis Smith came off the bench to score 11 points while senior guard Rachel Pearson chipped in 10 points with five rebounds.
 
The Seahawks were led by senior guard Shatia Cole, who tallied 18 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Jasmine Steele and sophomore guard Madison Raque each contributed 13 points for UNCW in the loss.
 
How It Happened: Drexel overcame a 22-10 deficit early in the second quarter by scoring 16 of the next 20 points to even the score at 26-26 on a Creighton three-point field goal with 2:43 left in the first half. UNCW reclaimed a 30-28 advantage before a 10-0 Drexel run gave the Dragons a 38-30 advantage they did not relinquish. The Seahawks narrowed the gap to 60-57 with 2:19 remaining in regulation, but the Dragons ended the game with an 11-0 run.
 
#SeahawkStats: Drexel has won eight consecutive games over the Seahawks and leads the series by a 17-8 margin … UNCW has lost six of its last seven games … Raque's 13 points equaled her career high, which was set against UNC Pembroke in the season opener … Cole has scored 10 or more points in 11 of her last 13 games, including the last nine games in a row … In addition, Cole has been the Seahawks' leading scorer in seven straight games … Steele has posted four consecutive double-digit scoring performances … Led by 10 rebounds from sophomore forward Rebekah Banks, the Seahawks outrebounded Drexel, 36-31 … Banks posted her sixth game with 10 or more rebounds this season.
