Northeastern Hands Seahawks 69-52 Loss

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Freshman guard Jess Genco scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half as Northeastern used a strong shooting effort after the intermission to hand UNCW a 69-52 loss in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at Cabot Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
The win, which was Northeastern's fourth in a row, elevated the Huskies' record to 12-14 overall and 7-8 in the CAA while the Seahawks dropped to 7-19 overall and 3-12 in league play with their fourth straight loss.
 
Led by Genco, the Huskies connected on 51.7 percent of their attempts in the second half, including an impressive 7-for-11 performance from long range, to claim the victory. Genco made 5 of 13 shots from the field in the win, including a 4-for-8 effort from beyond the arc.
 
Senior forward Samantha DeFreese added 15 points and five rebounds for Northeastern while sophomore guard Claudia Ortiz contributed 11 points with 10 rebounds.
 
The Seahawks were led by senior guard Shatia Cole, who scored a game-high 18 points, including 10 in the first half. She made 7 of 14 field goal attempts, including a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
 
Junior guard Jasmine Steele tallied 12 points with four rebounds and three assists for UNCW.
 
How It Happened: Northeastern outscored UNCW by a 23-10 count in the third quarter, including a 17-3 run to end the period. Genco led the Huskies' spurt by scoring eight points in the stanza while Ortiz contributed six points.
