Diamond Hawks Slug Their Way Past Red Storm



WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW exploded for six runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to break open a one-run game as the Seahawks surged past St. John's, 16-1, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 2-0 on the young season with the win while the Red Storm dipped to 0-2.

Freshman Starter Alex Royalty (1-0) held SJU to a run, unearned, on a hit and a walk over his five innings of work.

Kevin MaGee (0-1), meanwhile, was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 2.1 innings.

Gavin Stupienski knocked in three runs on the strength of a double and triple while Stack, who finished with two hits, slammed his first career homer to highlight the UNCW fourth inning.

 Adding a game-high three hits was Robbie Thorburn, who has six hits combined in the first two games of the season. Kennard McDowell knocked in three runs, including two with a single in the third.

Up next: The Seahawks close out the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start against Richmond (2-0).

How it happened: UNCW sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning as UNCW built an 8-1 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Stupienski and Nick Feight opened the scoring which concluded with a 2-run single by McDowell.

Inside the box score: UNCW went 10-for-19 with RISP and 15-for-28 with runners on base … Thorburn had the game's lone 2-out RBI with a single in the second inning … Seahawk pitchers combined to hold the Red Storm hitless with RISP (0-8) and runners on base (0-13) … Royalty recorded 10 ground ball outs for UNCW.
